Ok, a little background story to start out with. I had a big birthday last year and had a real problem with turning the big 4-0! My kids are getting older and I was growing larger. I decided that all I wanted for the next coming years was to get back in shape and lose my extra poundage.
So I requested the new Wii Fit game for my Wii System. I hate the thought of going to a gym so maybe this would get me motivated. It did. I loved it! I almost immediately changed the way I thought about exercise. This was actually FUN! I started eating better and working out. I lost 25lbs in no time at all.
So this year I invested in the new Wii Active Home Fitness Game. It is not really a game per say it is like having your own personal trainer. You can train on your own or work out with family or my favourite friends. It monitors your progress and gives you feedback too. You can target your upper or lower body as well as a cardio workout. It customizes to you and what you want to achieve. The Wii Active comes with a stretchy resistant band that really intensifies your workout. I had no idea how this rubber band could make a difference, but oh my goodness it surely does. My arms and legs felt the strain for a couple of days. This is good though because you know it is working. The old saying applies- no pain, no gain. I also comes with a neat little leg strap that attaches with velcro and you insert the nanchuck into it so the program can monitor your movement better. Like the Wii Fit the Wii Active teaches you not only to workout, but to workout properly. If your position or balance is off it will know and correct you. This way you are getting the optimum out of every exercise.
There are lots of great thing to do on the Wii Active. In the Baseball section you can pitch, catch, throw or bat. In the Volleyball section learn to serve, bump, volley and block. If Basketball is your sport then you can practice grabbing the ball and shooting hoops or passing. Tennis anyone?? Play the net if you wish and perfect that serve too. There seems like endless exercises to try. Leg lunges, squats, oh and I almost forgot my favourite-BOXING! This one is really great after a hard long day at work-Take out all your frustrations by smashing targets with your killer strength punches. There are pre-set or custom workout plans. You can set goals and see how many calories you have burned. Even set it up for a 30-Day Challenge. If you already own a Wii Fit Board you can use it to enhance your workout too. Everything you do can be stored in a handy journal and you can even achieve medals for your performance. I find this motivating too.
If you want to lose some weight or just get in shape I really recommend the Wii Active. The cardio work out is intense, so start with the beginner level unless you love to run, box, run, dance, run, play ball, run, etc. It really is fun and you don’t really think you doing any good until you stop and feel burn the next day. BTW I now weigh in at a very happy 110 lbs.
Retails for about $60.00 Canadian but will vary depending on retailers and sales
